Dehydration Indicators Beyond Water Intake in Show Pigs

When people think about dehydration in show pigs, the first thing they usually look at is whether the pig is drinking water.
While water intake is important, dehydration often starts showing up in other ways long before a pig completely stops drinking. In the show pig industry, many exhibitors miss the early warning signs because they’re focused only on feed consumption or how full the water bucket looks.
Recognizing dehydration early can help prevent major problems before they affect a pig’s condition in the ring!
Changes in Skin Appearance
One of the first signs of dehydration is often seen in the skin and hair coat. A dehydrated pig may begin to look dull, flaky or rough haired (see the pig image below). The skin may lose its healthy shine and appear tight or dry.
Many exhibitors mistake this for poor hair care or assume the pig simply needs more oil or conditioner. While grooming products can improve appearance temporarily, dehydration often starts internally before it becomes obvious externally.
Some pigs may also lose their “fresh” look and appear harder in their rib shape or tighter in their movement because their body’s lacking proper fluid balance.

Slower Recovery After Exercise
Healthy pigs should recover relatively fast after walking or exercise. A dehydrated pig, however, may continue breathing hard long after activity stops.
Signs to watch for include:
Heavy breathing after minimal exercise
Longer recovery time
Sluggish movement
Lack of energy during walking
Reluctance to move
Many exhibitors push pigs harder during exercise without realizing dehydration may already be limiting the pig’s ability to recover properly.
Sunken Eyes and Facial Expression
A pig’s eyes can tell you a lot about hydration status. Mild dehydration may cause the eyes to appear slightly dull or sunken. Pigs may also lose their alert, bright expression.
Healthy pigs typically appear attentive and aware of their surroundings. Dehydrated pigs often seem tired, less reactive or slower to respond.
Some exhibitors describe dehydrated pigs as looking “drained” or “worn down,” even when there are no severe symptoms yet.
Dry Mouth and Sticky Gums
Another overlooked indicator is dryness inside the mouth. A well-hydrated pig usually has moist gums and saliva. Dehydrated pigs may develop tacky or sticky gums and thicker saliva.
Although this isn’t always easy to check during a busy show, it can help confirm dehydration when paired with other symptoms.
Changes in Stool Consistency
Stool consistency can also reveal hydration problems. Dehydrated pigs may produce smaller, firmer stool because the body is trying to conserve water.
On the other hand, stress-related dehydration may sometimes contribute to loose stool due to digestive upset. Monitoring changes in manure consistency can provide clues about a pig’s overall hydration and health status.
Increased Body Temperature
A dehydrated pig often struggles to cool itself effectively. Since pigs don’t sweat like other animals, they rely heavily on proper hydration, shade, airflow and cool water to help regulate body temperature. When dehydration sets in, staying cool becomes even harder.
This may lead to:
Warm skin
Increased breathing rate
Red or flushed skin appearance
Excessive laying around fans or cool areas
Dehydration combined with heat stress can become dangerous or even deadly during summer shows.
Preventing Dehydration
Preventing dehydration requires more than simply filling the water bucket. Successful exhibitors focus on keeping pigs comfortable and encouraging consistent intake by:
Providing cool, clean water at all times
Using fans and ventilation
Avoiding over-exercise during extreme heat
Monitoring feed intake closely and using supplements to support appetite
Minimizing unnecessary stress during hauling
Offering electrolytes when appropriate
Supporting Hydration and Appetite
Electrolytes can be especially helpful during summer shows, hauling, heat stress or times when pigs aren’t drinking as consistently. They help support fluid balance and replace key nutrients lost during periods of stress.
Electrolyte is designed to help support hydration when pigs need extra support. Adding Electrolyte before, during or after stressful events can help keep show pigs drinking, recovering and looking fresher throughout show season.
Since hydration and appetite often go hand in hand, Appetite Attack can also be a helpful tool when pigs need support staying on feed. Appetite Attack is a daily gut health supplement that can be top dressed with any diet to help livestock get back on feed faster, support immunity and enhance freshness and eye appeal.
For pigs that need more immediate support getting up and eating again, Show Gun can be used as an oral drench to help promote appetite and support animals during stressful times like hauling, heat stress, showing or changes in routine. It’s designed to help get show animals back on track quickly so they can stay ready for the ring!
Bottom line, the earlier dehydration is recognized, the easier it is to correct before it affects performance and overall health.
In the show pig industry, dehydration isn’t always obvious at first. Many pigs continue drinking water while still showing signs that their body’s struggling to stay properly hydrated.
Changes in skin condition, breathing, movement, appetite, recovery time and overall appearance are often the earliest clues exhibitors should watch for. Paying attention to these smaller details can help prevent serious health problems and keep pigs looking and performing their best throughout show season!
