Hair Retention in Summer: What Actually Works for Pigs

As temperatures rise, keeping a show pig’s hair long, healthy and fresh can become a challenge. Some pigs start to lose hair quickly, while others develop patchy coats, dull skin or uneven shedding.

Some summer hair loss is normal. Pigs naturally adjust their hair coat as the weather gets warmer. But when a pig starts shucking hair fast or the coat begins to look rough, dry or uneven, it may be a sign that heat, stress, nutrition or daily care needs a closer look.

This is where the little things matter. A consistent routine, good airflow, clean water, proper nutrition and the right skin and hair care can help your pig stay more comfortable and look fresher through the summer months.

Why Pigs Shuck Hair

Pigs shed hair as part of their natural response to warmer weather. As temperatures increase, the body works to reduce insulation so the pig can release heat more easily.

Hair shedding can be affected by:

  • Day length and seasonal changes

  • Temperature and humidity

  • Airflow and ventilation

  • Nutrition

  • Health and stress level

  • Daily skin and hair care

A pig that’s struggling to handle heat may shuck hair more quickly or unevenly. Rapid temperature changes, poor air circulation and high humidity can make it harder for pigs to regulate body temperature. When that happens, skin and hair quality can suffer.

Hair loss doesn’t always mean something is wrong, but it can be a helpful signal. If the coat changes quickly or the pig starts rubbing, scratching or looking dull, it’s time to look at the whole picture.

Focus on Heat Stress First

Swine specialists often point out that hair retention problems in the summer are usually a sign of a bigger heat stress challenge, not just a coat issue. Before changing several products, supplements or routines, start by looking at your pig’s overall comfort.

When pigs are cool, hydrated and maintaining normal intake, coat condition often improves over time. That starts with a comfortable environment, consistent nutrition and support during the hottest parts of the day.

Keeping Pigs Cool

Good airflow is critical during the summer. Fans, proper ventilation and fresh air movement help remove heat and humidity from the barn. Air moving across the pig’s body can also help with cooling and reducing stress.

Rinsing your pig several times a day during hot weather can also help, especially after exercise. A cool rinse, not a full wash, helps bring body temperature down and can make the pig more comfortable. Just be careful not to overdo it with harsh washing or scrubbing, which can dry out the skin.

Hydration support can also make a difference when pigs are dealing with heat, travel or other stressful conditions. Electrolyte helps promote hydration, manage stress and support a fuller look, while probiotics help support gut health and intake. It can be mixed in water or top dressed on feed as part of a daily summer routine.

Build a Daily Skin and Hair Routine

A good skin and hair routine is one of the most important parts of summer show pig care. Consistency matters more than trying to fix everything at once.

  1. Washing

Washing helps keep the coat clean and can support healthy skin when done correctly. A good bath removes dirt, sweat and buildup while helping stimulate the skin and hair follicles.

Products are also important when it comes to washing pigs, you want to make sure you are using a good shampoo and conditioner to keep the coat nourished, avoiding harsh soaps. I personally would recommend Mane and Tail shampoo and conditioner.

You don’t need to scrub aggressively. Focus on working the product through the coat, rinsing well and keeping the skin clean without irritating it.

  1. Conditioning

After washing, use a conditioner or sheen product to help keep the coat nourished. Brush it in evenly so it reaches the hair and skin instead of sitting on top of the coat.

Once you have applied your conditioner, you can use a blow dryer to blow it into the coat. This promotes hair growth and makes sure the products get distributed evenly. I recommend conditioning morning and night with a non-oil-based conditioner, making sure to brush it in evenly throughout the pigs coat.

The best routine is one you can repeat every day. Pigs respond better to steady care than big changes right before show day.

  1. Keep Pens Clean

A clean pen also helps protect your pig’s skin, hair and overall comfort during the summer. Remove manure and wet bedding often, and watch for signs of mites or lice. If a pig is constantly rubbing on gates, walls or feeders, hair loss can happen quickly in those areas.

Dry bedding also makes a big difference. Damp areas can lead to stronger odor, higher ammonia and more skin irritation. Essential Dry helps absorb moisture and neutralize ammonia odor in pens, trailers and indoor livestock areas, creating a fresher space for your pig.

After cleaning, disinfect pens as needed to help reduce pest pressure. A dry, well-managed environment gives your pig a better chance to keep a healthy coat through the summer.

Do Daily Check-Ins

The scale is helpful, but it won’t tell you everything. During hot weather, take time each day to look at your pig’s skin, hair, appetite and attitude.

Check for:

  • Dull or dry hair

  • Flaky skin

  • Bald spots or circular hair loss

  • Excessive rubbing or scratching

  • Red or inflamed skin

  • Thick crusting or lesions

  • Changes in feed or water intake

  • Slower recovery after exercise

  • Rapid weight loss

  • Sudden changes in attitude

Some hair loss is normal during the summer, but these signs may point to parasites, disease or a nutritional issue that needs attention. Mange, lice, fungal infections and nutrient deficiencies can look similar to seasonal shedding. If hair loss is severe, spreads quickly or comes with irritated skin, it’s best to get help from your local vet.

Lastly, small changes are easier to manage when you catch them early. Taking photos once a week can help you compare coat condition and notice changes you might miss day to day.

Nutrition’s Role in Skin and Hair Health

Healthy hair starts with a healthy pig. Nutrition plays a major role in skin integrity, hair growth and overall coat quality.

Hair is made mostly of protein, so pigs need the right balance of amino acids to support normal hair growth. Lysine, methionine and overall protein quality can all affect how the coat looks and feels.

Several vitamins and minerals are also tied to skin and hair health, including:

  • Zinc

  • Copper

  • Biotin

  • Vitamin A

  • Vitamin E

If a pig is lacking these key nutrients, the coat may look rough, dry or dull. Skin may also become flaky or irritated.

Cooler Diets for Summer Feeding

Fun fact: Pigs don’t sweat, so their diet matters even more during hot weather. Feeds higher in protein or fiber can create more heat during digestion, which can make it harder for pigs to stay comfortable and keep eating through the summer.

That is why it is important to think about how your feeding program affects heat stress and intake during hot weather. ShoMax diets are formulated to help reduce the heat of digestion, which can help pigs maintain feed intake when temperatures rise.

Feeds like Krave, Surge or Crease It are designed to support your pig’s summer nutrition program while providing the vitamins, minerals and amino acids pigs need to thrive.

Word of caution though, before adding several supplements at once, look at your full feeding program. Over-supplementing can create more problems than it solves. If you’re unsure what your pig may be missing, work with one of Ralco Show’s nutritionists to better understand your current diet, make the right adjustments. Don't Forget Water

Water intake is especially important in the summer. As temperatures rise, pigs may eat less feed but drink more water. Cool, clean water helps support hydration and temperature regulation.

Make sure pigs have constant access to fresh water. Check waterers often to make sure they’re working correctly and staying clean.

A pig that’s not drinking enough may struggle to stay cool, stay on feed and maintain a fresh look.

Make Small Adjustments, Not Big Corrections

When a pig starts losing hair, it can be tempting to change everything at once. But big swings in washing, supplements, feed or exercise can create more stress and make the problem harder to manage.

Instead, focus on steady adjustments. If your pig is getting too hot, improve airflow and rinse during the cooler parts of the day. If the skin looks dry, review your washing and conditioning routine. If the coat looks dull, take a closer look at nutrition, hydration and overall health.

Also avoid overdoing the things that are meant to help. Excessive washing, aggressive scrubbing, sudden diet changes, poor ventilation, overcrowded pens or over-supplementing minerals can all work against you. Exercising during the hottest part of the day can also add unnecessary stress.

Overall, summer hair care isn’t about one quick fix. It’s about building a routine that keeps your pig comfortable, healthy and fresh every day.
