De-Stress Ideas After a High-Stress Show for Pigs

Livestock shows can be exciting and rewarding, but they can also be physically and mentally demanding for show pigs.

Between hauling, unfamiliar environments, loud noises, changes in routine and long days at the barn, pigs often experience significant stress during and after a show. While exhibitors spend a great deal of time preparing animals before an event, post-show recovery is just as important.

Prioritize Rest and Recovery

One of the best things you can do after returning home is allow your pig time to rest.

Traveling and showing require energy, and many pigs benefit from a quieter schedule for a day following a show. A rest day here and there is highly encouraged.

A clean, comfortable pen with fresh bedding can also help create a relaxing atmosphere. Familiar surroundings often reduce stress and help pigs recover more quickly from the excitement of the show barn.

Focus on Hydration

Stress and travel can sometimes decrease water consumption and increase the risk of dehydration.

Supplements like Electrolyte can also be used as part of your post show management program, especially during periods of heat or added stress. Work with your nutritionist or veterinarian to determine how it fits your animal’s needs.

Checking hydration status after a show is important, especially in the summer when heat and travel can compound stress. Check out this blog to learn more about signs of dehydration beyond water intake.

Maintain Consistent Feeding Practices

While it may be tempting to make major feed changes after a disappointing show, consistency is usually the better approach. Returning pigs to their normal feeding schedule helps restore routine and encourages steady intake.

Watch for any decreases in appetite, as stress can sometimes affect feed consumption. Most pigs will return to normal eating habits once they have had time to relax and recover.

If your pig is slower to get back on feed after travel or a stressful show, Show Gun can be used as an oral supplement to help get the back on track and promote appetite. Appetite Attack can also be used as part of your daily post show routine to help encourage feed intake and support pigs that may need more consistent nutrition support to keep them healthy and hungry.

Evaluate Physical Condition

After unloading, take time to carefully assess your pig. Check for any signs of soreness, minor injuries, hoof issues or skin irritation that may have developed during travel or while stalled at the show. Early identification of problems allows for quicker treatment and prevents small issues from becoming larger concerns.

Pay close attention to attitude and movement. A pig that appears unusually lethargic, stiff or reluctant to eat may need additional evaluation.

Spend Time Building Positive Experiences

Not every interaction needs to involve training. Sometimes the best way to help a pig decompress is through calm, positive handling.

Washing, brushing, quiet walks, scratches or simply sitting in the pen can help your pig relax and rebuild trust after a stressful show. Treats can also be used in moderation to create a positive experience and encourage calm, comfortable interaction. My pigs love marshmallows!

These low-pressure moments remind pigs that being around people doesn’t always mean travel, competition or another demanding task.

Learn from the Show and Move Forward

Recovery matters for your pig, but it matters for you too. Once your pig has settled in, take time to rest and think through how the show went.

Look at what worked well and what could be improved before the next one. Consider travel preparation, hydration, feeding, exercise, attitude and behavior in the ring.

Every show gives you information you can use moving forward. By focusing on recovery and making small adjustments along the way, you can help your pig stay healthy and ready for the next time they step into the ring.
